چکیده

The next generation of weed seed germination models will need to account for variable soil microclimate conditions. To predict this microclimate environment we have developed a suite of individual tools (models) that can be used in conjunction with the next generation of weed seed germination models. The three tools that will be outlined here are GlobalTempSIM, GlobalRainSIM, and the soil temperature and moisture model (STM). Each model was compared with several sets of observed data from worldwide locations. Overall, the climate predictors compared favorably. GlobalTempSIM had a bias between 22.7 and +0.9 C, mean absolute errors between 1.9 and 5.0 C, and an overall Willmott d-index of 0.79 to 0.95 (where d 5 1 represents total agreement between observed and modeled data) for 12 global validation sites in 2007. GlobalRainSIM had a bias for cumulative precipitation ranging from 2210 to +305 mm, a mean absolute error between 29 and 311 mm, and a corresponding d-index of 0.78 to 0.99 for the sites and years compared. The high d-indices indicate that the models adequately captured the annual patterns for the validation sites. STM also performed well in comparisons with actual soil temperatures with a range of 22 to +4.6 C biases and mean absolute errors between 0.7 and 6.8 C, with the d-index ranging from 0.83 to 0.99 for the soil temperature comparisons. The soil moisture prediction annual bias was between 20.09 and +0.12 cm cm, mean absolute errors ranging from 0.02 to 0.16 cm cm, and possessed a d-index between 0.32 and 0.91 for the validation sites. These models were developed in JAVA, are simple to use, operate on multiple platforms (e.g., Mac, personal computer, Sun), and are freely available for download from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service website (http://www.ars. usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid511787). Nomenclature: Environmental modeling, climate, simulation, JAVA.

Applications of hydrothermal time to quantifying and modeling seed germination and dormancy

Kent J. Bradford Department of Vegetable Crops, One Shields Avenue, University of California, Davis, CA 956168631, U.S.A. E-mail: [email protected] Knowledge and prediction of seasonal weed seedling emergence patterns is useful in weed management programs. Seed dormancy is a major factor influencing the timing of seedling emergence, and once dormancy is broken, environmental conditions det...

The Effect of Weed Competition on Germination Indices and Seed Vigor of Chickpea

ABSTRACT- This experiment was carried out during the growing seasons of 2010 and 2011 at the Agricultural Research Farm of Bu-Ali Sina University, to study the effect of weed competition on subsequent germination and seed vigour of chickpea. 12 weed interference durations were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Experiments consisted of two sets of treatment...

Stratification Requirements for Seed Dormancy Alleviation in a Wetland Weed

Echinochloaoryzicola(syn.E. phyllopogon) is an exotic weed of California rice paddies that has evolved resistance to multiple herbicides. Elimination of seedlingsthroughcertain weed control methods can limit the spread of this weed, but is contingent on accurate predictions of germination and emergence timing, which are influenced by seed dormancy levels. In summer annuals, dormancy can often be...

Studies on seed germination and growth in weed species of rice field under salinity stress.

An investigation was made to see the salt tolerance of 10 weed species of rice. Properly dried and treated seeds of weed species were placed on 9 cm diameter petridishes lined with Whatman No. 1 filter paper under 6 salinity regimes, viz. 0 (control), 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 dS m(-1). The petri dishes were then kept in germinator at 25 +/- 1.0 degrees C and 12 hr light. The number of germinated see...

Mesquite is an invasive and problematic weed in warm and dry areas and so its management is very important. In order to study the effective factors on mesquite seed germination, the following studies were conducted to investigate: 1- seed viability; 2- the effect of constant temperatures on seed germination including 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C independent dark and independent light ...
